Purpose & Aims of

The Friends of Scarborough Art Gallery

PURPOSE /AIMS

The Friends of Scarborough Art Gallery are a lively and enthusiastic people who care about art galleries and museums and the contribution which these make to our cultural life and heritage.

The purpose of the thriving and successful group is to support and promote Scarborough Art gallery and its collections of oil paintings, watercolours, prints and drawings, which include notable examples depicting Scarborough and the surrounding area. The Gallery also houses a significant collection of railway posters.

MEETINGS.

Monthly meetings of the Friends feature illustrated lectures, given by experts, on a wide variety of topics. There is an opportunity to talk to the speaker and to socialise with members over refreshments at the conclusion of each meeting.

OUTINGS AND VISITS.

Members receive newsletters giving details of Friends’ activities. These include outings to regional art galleries, museums, historic buildings and gardens, and occasional trips abroad. Friends also receive notices of forthcoming events at Scarborough Art Gallery and invitations to exhibition previews.

The Friends are corporate members of the British Association of Friends of Museums (and Art galleries) which organises regional and national meetings, open to individual members, which provide opportunities for the exchange of information and ideas.

VOLUNTARY WORK.

Individual members with particular skills and interests are encouraged to use them for the benefit of the Gallery. One complied the catalogue which accompanied an exhibition of works bequeathed to the Gallery by Tom Laughton. Others have made a photographic record of the collections, which is used for a variety of purposes.

FUNDRAISING.

The Friends hold fund-raising events which have contributed to the purchase of items for the collections, helped to defray the cost of conservation and enabled the Friends to commission a suite of specially- designed seating - an attractive and practical addition to the Galleries facilities.
